DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An Iranian official claimed Tuesday that Iranian-German prisoner Jamshid Sharmahd died before Tehran could execute him — directly contradicting the country’s earlier announcement he had been put to death.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, journalist Yashar Ali wrote, "The Islamic Republic of Iran says it has executed Jamshid Sharmahd, a German citizen and US resident. Sharmahd's daughter, @GazelleSharmahd, has been advocating for his release since he was kidnapped in Dubai and rendered back to Iran."

Jamshid Shamahd was one of several Iranian dissidents abroad in recent years either tricked or kidnapped back to Iran.

Iran’s judiciary has said Iranian-German dissident Jamshid Sharmahd died before his execution was reported by state media late last month. The judiciary’s news agency said on 28 October that Sharmahd - who was sentenced to death on the charge of "corruption on Earth” in 2023 following a trial that human rights groups said was grossly unfair - had been “punished for his actions”.

The State Department in the U.S., where Sharmahd once lived, said, "Sharmahd's death at the hands of the Iranian regime was tragic and senseless."
