An Ulster County resident has tested positive for the mosquito-borne eastern equine encephalitis virus, health officials say.

A person in Ulster County has been hospitalized with Eastern equine encephalitis, health officials said. It is the first confirmed human case of the disease recorded in the state since 2015.

A human case of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) was reported in New York for the first time in nearly 10 years, and the state Department of Health is encouraging New Yorkers to take personal protective measures to avoid mosquito bites.

The rare mosquito-borne virus was detected in Ulster County, the New York State Department of Health said. The individual is hospitalized, it said.
