Reps. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., and Garret Graves, R-La., are the lead sponsors of the Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 82), a measure introduced last year that would eliminate Social Security’s windfall elimination provision and government pension offset.

The WEP and GPO reduce — and in some cases eliminate — Social Security benefits for some federal retirees and other public sector workers, as well as their spouses, widows and widowers. For years, some members of Congress have been urging a full repeal of the two provisions to give affected annuitants a full Social Security benefit amount.

In March, Reps. Garret Graves (R-La.) and Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) called on the House Ways and Means Committee to hold a markup on their bipartisan bill, H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act, to fully repeal both the WEP and GPO. On April 16, Ways and Means held a hearing on the subject.
